Join Us for a Weekend in Gulf Hagas

Gulf HagasIt's called the "Grand Canyon of the East" --- and it's right in our own backyard!

This summer, the Carrabassett Valley Outdoor Association will spend a weekend in Gulf Hagas, a National Natural Landmark in Brownville.

The area features a challenging 8.5 mile loop trail that traces the rim of a 400-foot deep, four-mile long gorge. It loops past several waterfalls and winds through a section of the The Hermitage, 35 acres of some of Maine's oldest white pines.

A section of the AT passes through the scenic property, which is managed by the Nature Conservancy, the National Park Service, the Appalachian Trail Conference and Northern Maine Woods.

There's some beautiful swimming holes along the route which should provide for a refreshing dip during our July hike.

If you've never been, please join us for the weekend July 10-12. It's well worth the trip to the Moosehead Region and the Great North Woods.

This will be CVOA's first visit to Gulf Hagas. We've booked a group camp site at the Pine Camp Campsite in the North Maine Woods ...  just about five miles outside the Gulf. We've got room for 12-15 tents --- so book early if you want to join us. The cost is $55 per person for two nights camping and a welcoming BBQ Friday night. The site includes two outhouses, three picnic tables (one under cover), parking and some good fishing spots nearby. There are several other mountains in the area worth hiking as well opportunities for canoeing and exploring.

We'll be travelling to the area Friday July10, hiking Gulf Hagas on Saturday, holding a pot luck dinner Saturday and heading home Sunday July 12. Outing organizers Sandy Jamison, Linda and Paul Trueworthy and Nancy Perry will be preparing a list of things to do in the area as well as information about what to bring for food and gear. So stay tuned!
