A spring waterfall hike turned into a wintry snowshoe trek
as the seasons stubbornly refused to move forward. But the results were the
same: A great time for the CVOA troopers who braved the weather and slogged into Reed Falls Easter weekend.
“Wow!” was the most common response heard as the spectacular
falls came into view.
Some 14 members of the local outdoor club donned their
Gore-Tex and buckled up their snowshoes for the 2-mile trek into the Falls,
located off Route 27 in Kingfield.
Following Reed Brook deep into the woods, the hikers tracked
and traversed the roaring stream until they reached the cascading falls, at peak
strength with spring runoff.
“I’m coming back next summer,’ said Jan Doherty, one of the
hikers who was viewing the falls for the first time.
Reed Falls is one of many waterfalls tucked away in the
woods of Kingfield and Carrabassett. CVOA has led several tours into several
area falls.
Following the hike, CVOA members headed up to West Mountain
for an indoor BBQ.
“Great time,” said Peter Weston.
