DOWNEAST ADVENTURE!!!

Everything You Want or Need to Know .. We Hope!

If you’re reading this, it means you’re interestred in CVOA’s Downeast Adventure, a weekend of hiking, biking, ocean kayaking, sight-seeing and socializing in a unique corner of Maine .. and Canada, where FDR’s summer cottage is just across the Roosevelt Memorial Bridge on Campobello Island.

We’ll be staying at the Eastland Motel, which will be feeding us a continental breakfast both mornings and giving us the use of their large backyard and picnic area for a pot luck dinner and fire pit social on Saturday night. If you want a preview if our surroundings, click on: www.eastlandmotel.com. Or visit the Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/TheEastlandMotel.

There are still a few rooms left. Contact us ASAP if you want to reserve one (nperry24420@roadrunner.com or ltruew@yahoo.com).

Opportunities for outdoor activities abound. Explore them!

There’s a group planning to hike the Bold Coast on Saturday … a 5.8 or 9.8 mile hike along remote, rugged cliffs. There are shorter hikes along the shore, also offering fabulous scenery. Check out two links below for maps and detailed trail information.

On Sunday, there’s a group that plans to hike and bike on Campobello Island, 5 miles from our motel across the bridge into the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Others are planning to golf on the island’s course.

The island is home to FDR’s summer cottage and a 2800-acre park. It features carriage roads for scenic drives as well as ample opportunities to hike and bike. There are two lighthouses … and another two in Lubec .. including West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. More information is provided in the links below. BRING A PASSPORT! You’ll need it to get in and out of the country .. even if you’re crossing the border on your bike.

Keep in mind: There are no structured events on this outing. We’ll get you there and settled and provide you with information .. but you’re on your own!. If you need suggestions for what to do or want to tag along with a group .. speak up!

The list of names attached to this email shows you who will be attending the trip. Find a friend and make plans.

Linda Trueworthy & Nancy Perry are trip coordinators for this outing and they’ll both be at the Eastland Friday afternoon .. although they may be a little weary: They are biking in on a 2-day trek from Ellsworth to Machias along the new Sunrise Rail Trail.

Friday night, you’ll be on your own for dinner. There’s a list of restaurants listed below. It could be a busy weekend so you may want to make reservations.

The Eastland will provide us with a continental breakfast Saturday morning: Coffee, hot chocolate, tea, juice, yogurt, fresh fruit and homemade blueberry, strawberry and banana muffins. The breakfast is included in your room rate.

Saturday night, CVOA will be hosting a BBQ on the back lawn of the Eastland. We’ll be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs and getting the fire pit cranked up for an evening of outdoor socializing. The price of the BBQ is included in your room rate but .. please bring an appetizer, side dish, salad or dessert to share with the group. Just let Linda or Nancy know which category of food you’re bringing so we don’t end up with 15 three-bean-salads.

Below is a list of activities in the area you might enjoy. Catch up with some friends at the Eastland Friday afternoon and make plans. If you check out the list of names on this email, it will give you an idea of who will be joining us on this outing … if you’re the type to plan ahead.

We’re also lucky enough to have CVOA members in the area. Dean and Liz Alley will be joining us for some of our activities.

We’ve also got our own Bill Haefele joining us for the adventure. When he’s not a ski bum, Bill is president of the Bar Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce and an expert on this part of the world. We’ve asked him to bring maps and brochures which we’ll leave at the front desk for you to look over.

And .. most of you will drive right by the big information center outside of Bangor. Stop in and arm yourself with guides, maps and reading materials.

Here’s some info to help you make the most of the outing. And remember the most important thing: Have fun!!!
