Eleven years and still enthralled
OUr outdoor enthusiasts renewed their enthusiasm for one
of Maine’s most special places: Baxter State Park.
Some 19 members of the CVOA spent 3 days in the 200,000 acre park, hiking, canoeing, fishing,
camping and socializing.
It was our 11th outing in the park .. and the
third time we have camped at Trout Brook in the northern end of the park.
For some, the trip was markedly nostalgic: Susan Fraser can
remember spending a week at nearby South Branch with her grandparents every
summer when she was young. She was thrilled to see the place had retained all
its charm.
It was her first outing there with CVOA “and I hope to come
back next year,” she said after a weekend kayaking in Matagamon Lake and
swimming at South Branch.
“A special place,” said Sandy Jamison, our secretary.
Members of the group hiked The Owl, Trout Mountain, North Traveler,
Howe Falls, Fowler Ponds and the Freezeout Trail. They canoed and kayaked and
fished in Matagamon and canoed on Millinocket Lake.
And they feasted .. as only CVOA can: A Super Salad Supper
Friday night featuring fresh lobster, chicken, fruit and other salads, an
antipasto and fresh berry pies. Saturday was the annual Baxter BBQ chicken with
roasted potatoes, corn bread pudding, fresh green beans, salads and key lime
pound cake with wild blueberries.
“Was it a 3-pound gain weekend or a 5-pound gain weekend,”
asked Glen Bickford.
Although there were heavy rains and lightning Friday night,
soaking several campers with less than water-tight tents, the skies cleared out
Saturday and remained clear for an awesome star and planet showing that night
that had campers crawling out of their tents in the wee hours to observe the
display.
