The Ski Museum of Maine is featuring a special exhibition this summer recognizing the accomplishments of Theo Johnsen.
Johnson, a Portland cabinet-maker and boat builder in the early 1900s, is credited with being a pioneer in the ski industry. He developed a ski called the Tajco, which he sold at his shop in Portland. In addition, Johnsen wrote what is thought to be the first book on skiing. Published in 1905, "The Winter Sport of Skeeing" includes lessons on downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and ski jumping.
The exhibit opened Friday at the Farmington-based ski museum. CVOA member and ski writer Dan Cassidy for on hand for the open house celebration.
"We had a decent turnout. The exhibit will be there all summer. We hope you'll come see it," said Dan.
The exhibit includes one of only two pair of Tajco skis known to still be in existence as well as six sale-sized models of the handcrafted ski and Johnsen's book on skiing.
The museum is located at 109 Church Street in downtown Farmington, just off Main Street. Many CVOA members are active in the ski useum, including John Christie, who serves as president of the museum. For more information, visit their web site at: www.skimuseumofmaine.org.
